Mr. Grabe Speaks to Portland Students about His Legal Career

Earlier this year,Timothy Grabe volunteered his time at a high school career fair in Portland, OR. While there, he had the chance to talk with students about his experiences as an attorney—including the good, the bad and the ugly. He recognized that a substantial number of high school students base their perception of a legal career off of television shows and movies, so he was glad that he had the opportunity to explain what his daily responsibilities are really like. He also noticed that many of the students thought that going to trial is exciting and fun, but Mr. Grabe gently corrected them by pointing out that going to court is an experience that should be taken very seriously.

Mr. Grabe also spoke about the changes that social media and modern technology have brought about in the practice of law. Since people regularly post about their lives on a variety of social media outlets, he explained that it is important to be cautious when going to trial. Nowadays, it is not uncommon for a plaintiff and/or defendant’s Facebook profile to be used as evidence in a case. At the end of the day, however, Mr. Grabe just wanted to the point across that practicing law is a great way to help those in need—especially those who have been wrongfully injured. He encouraged students to pursue their passions, whether they lie in the field of law or elsewhere, so he is happy that he was given the opportunity to volunteer his time and speak about personal experiences.
